Guide Review - Amps & Pickups 2

SONiVOX is the leading producer of SoundFont and sample CDs for professional studio work. Their "Amps & Pickups 2" collection builds on the original which was released two years before. This CD contains some "must have" instruments: Fender and Rickenbacker electric guitars and basses.

Available in SoundFont, Gigasampler or Kontakt formats, the disc contains eight folders of sounds divided into Fender Precision Bass Finger & Slap, Fender Precision Bass Pick, Fender Telecaster Mutes & Tones, Fender Telecaster Chords, Rickenbacker 330 6-String Guitar Mutes & Tones, Rickenbacker 330 6-String Chords, Rickenbacker 4003 Pick Bass, and Rickenbacker 4003 Finger Bass.

I reviewed the SoundFont version and found it easy to load the sounds into my Soundblaster Live card. I also tried it out with some old tunes I had made in SONAR. By substituting Sonic Implant's instruments for the Roland hardware sounds I normally use, I was able to create some fresh new sounds. It helps to read the accompanying documentation to achieve the best sound quality.

The SoundFont CD sells for US$199.95, while the Gigasampler and Kontakt versions are $229.95.
